What to Expect at your First PT visit

An at-a-glance look at your first visit with us at RTC...

During your appointment, your physical therapist will take time to learn about the history of your injury or related concerns. They will ask questions pertinent to your case, including medical history and may even ask to see reports or imaging from your doctor. All of our therapists are Doctors of physical therapy with the ability to provide direct access care and give a full hour of one-on-one care for your evaluation. This allows us to get a clear picture of your case and provide optimal care.

Your initial evaluation will include tests and measures to further assess where your limitations lie. This may include checking your joint range of motion, strength, areas of restriction if pain is present, and affected movement patterns, including balance and walking. Just by observing your gait (walking) cycle or movement patterns such as bending and squatting, we can assess quite a bit. Your exam may also include orthopedic testing to rule in or out any injuries to the affected area.

Then, you and your therapist will work together to form treatment goals tailored to your needs and what you hope to achieve with physical therapy. This may be to resolve low back pain so that you can get through your child's soccer game without feeling bothered by it. Or, improving knee strength and mobility so that you can squat down and safely tend to your garden without fear of falling or increasing knee pain. We want to see you thrive, meet your health goals, and live your best life.

Your initial evaluation will also include time for treatment which may include hands-on care, guided exercises, and/or other intervention. You will also receive education on how to start taking the steps needed to work towards your established goals. We like to use anatomy models, literature, and illustrations to help with understanding the education provided and are ready to answer any questions you may have. Should your treatment include a home exercise program, rest assured, you will have access to these exercises sent directly to your phone or email, or a copy in hand if that works better for you.

Your progress depends on your commitment to the therapy process and adherence to prescribed exercises. Staying consistent with your home exercise program is vital in making strides toward your goals. Upon return to your follow-up visit, reassessments will take place that will allow your therapist to make any necessary changes or progressions to your program so that it works best for you and where your body is at.
